Arab Sea - Follow-ups: A first-of-its-kind study has revealed how people are actually using the automated chat program "ChatGPT," a popular artificial intelligence program developed by "OpenAI," according to the "Independent" newspaper. Since its launch in 2022, the number of users of the artificial intelligence tool has increased to over 700 million, equivalent to "nearly 10 percent of the world's adult population," according to "OpenAI." The new study, conducted by the economic research team at "OpenAI," in collaboration with economist David Deming from Harvard University, analyzed 1.5 million conversations with "ChatGPT" to track consumer use. "OpenAI" stated that the results showed that conversations usually focus on daily tasks "that achieve economic value through both personal and professional use," and called for artificial intelligence to be considered a "basic right" for humans. "Consumer use of (ChatGPT) is primarily focused on accomplishing daily tasks," "OpenAI" explained. It continued: "Three-quarters of conversations focus on practical guidance, information retrieval, and writing, with writing being the most common work task, while programming and self-expression remain specialized activities." This is the first study to use internal "ChatGPT" message data, with "OpenAI" reporting that it used privacy-preserving technologies to protect user data. The researchers found that the majority of people use "ChatGPT" for tasks and queries unrelated to work, while only 30 percent use it for professional tasks. The researchers wrote in the study: "Overall, our results suggest that (ChatGPT) has a widespread impact on the global economy. The accelerating pace of use outside of work suggests that the benefits of using generative AI may be significant at the level of well-being... In the field of work, we find that users are currently deriving value from using (ChatGPT) as a consultant or research assistant, and not just as a technology that directly performs work tasks." One of the unexpected findings of the study was that men and women use "ChatGPT" for different reasons. People with typical female names are more likely to use the artificial intelligence tool for practical guidance and writing assistance, while those with typical male names use it most often for technical assistance.
