Cairo – June 30, 2025 A broad national meeting was held in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, bringing together the leadership of the Wa'i National Movement of Yemen and peace activists and feminist workers from Abyan Governorate, with the aim of discussing ways to unite peace efforts and enhance the role of women in ending the war and achieving stability in Yemen. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Abdul Wali Ateef, Assistant Secretary-General of the Wa'i National Movement, in the presence of Ambassador Amna Mohsen, Ambassador of Peace and Goodwill, Professor Adila Khader, Secretary-General of the Yemeni Women's Union, Abyan Branch, and a number of peace activists from various Yemeni components and blocs. During the meeting, the participants stressed the importance of activating the comprehensive peace initiative launched by the Wa'i National Movement on March 3, 2021, which included in one of its clauses the establishment of the Yemeni Peace Committee as a comprehensive national platform to coordinate efforts and achieve sustainable peace. Pioneering women activists in Abyan stressed the need for an effective partnership with the Wa'i Movement to support women in Yemen and involve them in all stages of peace negotiations, as they are the most affected segment of society by the ongoing war. For his part, Dr. Ateef called for unifying peace blocs and efforts away from partisanship and regionalism, and transforming the peaceful struggle into collective institutional work, stressing the commitment of the Wa'i Movement to support Yemeni women and create a favorable environment for achieving peace, stability and development in all governorates. The meeting also came out with a number of recommendations, most notably expanding the circle of coordination between activists and peace blocs, empowering women, holding periodic meetings, and considering the Yemeni Peace Committee as a comprehensive framework for all forces and components seeking to end the war in Yemen.
