Liverpool continued their faltering results in the English Premier League, after only managing a 1-1 draw against their guest Sunderland in the 16th round, in a match hosted by "Anfield", which almost ended in a new loss for the home side were it not for a late goal. Sunderland took the lead through Shams El-Din Talebi in the 67th minute, exploiting a serious defensive error from captain Virgil van Dijk, who lost the ball in front of the goal, before Talebi shot it and it hit him and deceived goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Liverpool struggled during most of the match, amid a clear superiority for Sunderland, who were close to achieving their first win at Anfield since 1983. But the German Florian Wirtz, Liverpool's new signing, saved his team in the 81st minute, when he dribbled past two players and fired a powerful shot that hit defender Nordi Mukiele and went into the net, with the goal being recorded as an "own goal". Wirtz's statements: Wirtz said after the match: "We wanted to win, but we were unlucky. We are doing our best to come back and achieve victories," adding: "We just have to keep working, and hopefully things will change soon." Teams' standings: - Liverpool are in eighth place with 22 points, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal. - Sunderland are in sixth place with 23 points. Liverpool are going through their worst run of results in more than 70 years, having avoided their tenth defeat in the last 14 matches in all competitions thanks to the equalizing goal.
