Arab Gulf - Agencies: Alexander Alimov, Secretary of the Russian Commission to UNESCO, expressed Russia's hope that the Egyptian candidate for the organization's presidency, Khaled El-Enany, would win, given his distance from the biased positions taken by the organization's secretariat. The race for the position of Director-General of UNESCO is escalating as the elections approach in the fall of 2025, where the winner will succeed the French Audrey Azoulay. Prominent names in the competition include former Egyptian Minister Khaled El-Enany, the current Deputy Director-General, Mexican Gabriela Ramos, and the former Deputy Director-General, Congolese Firmin Edouard Matoko. In this regard, Alimov expressed his country's preference for the Egyptian candidate, considering that the other candidates represent the internal current in UNESCO, with which Moscow faces challenges in dealing. Alimov affirmed that Russia looks forward to UNESCO, with the appointment of a new Director-General, returning to the principle of neutrality that has been absent from the organization recently. These statements come after accusations made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov against the current Director-General Azoulay of bias and participation in media campaigns against Russia. These elections constitute a pivotal moment that may redraw UNESCO's policies and international relations in light of the currently tense geopolitical atmosphere.
