Arabian Sea - Yemen - Follow-ups: The World Health Organization announced the registration of 60,794 cases of the cholera epidemic in Yemen since the beginning of this year, including 164 deaths, during a press conference held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva. Dr. Catherine Albéerti, the technical officer for cholera affairs at the organization, confirmed that Yemen ranks second globally in the outbreak of the epidemic after South Sudan, which recorded 70,310 cases. The organization warned of the exacerbation of the crisis with the start of the rainy season, pointing to the deterioration of the sanitation infrastructure and the difficulty of delivering humanitarian aid to the affected areas. It also announced the allocation of 40 million doses of oral cholera vaccine for this year, 85% of which will be distributed to the most affected countries, with Sudan receiving the largest share. Globally, 31 countries recorded approximately 390,723 cases and 4,332 deaths from cholera during the current year. The organization called on the international community to mobilize urgent financial resources and accelerate vaccination operations, while emphasizing the need to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid and strengthen epidemiological surveillance systems, especially in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen, which has been exacerbated by the deterioration of basic health services.
