Yemen: Lahj sanitation workers' union demands local authority fulfill demands within 10 days.
Arabian Sea Newspaper - Special
Arabian Sea_ The General Syndicate of Municipalities and Cleaning Funds of Lahj demanded in a statement issued by it that the local authority in the governorate respond within ten days to the syndicate's demands to raise salaries and adopt a fair and equitable wage structure that takes into account the nature of the work and is commensurate with the living reality. The syndicate's statement indicated that the deterioration of the living situation in municipalities and cleaning funds is due to several accumulated factors, most notably the failure to raise salaries despite the doubling of revenues in the fund's purely revenue-based budget, and the level of revenue collection has been raised to more than ten times what it was before 2021 AD without any positive impact on employees' salaries. The syndicate explained that the salary of a sanitation worker does not exceed 57,000 riyals per month, which is not enough to sustain even one day in light of the difficult economic conditions experienced by the sanitation worker. In its statement, the syndicate demanded an immediate and fair increase in the salaries of workers commensurate with the living reality, and the adoption of a salary structure that takes into account the nature of the hard work and the unhealthy environment that workers face daily, with the approval of a clear and time-bound mechanism for increasing salaries periodically according to cost of living indicators. The syndicate also demanded that all workers be included under the umbrella of health and social insurance, the provision of personal protective equipment and occupational safety, the improvement of the work environment, and the provision of the necessary tools and equipment to perform tasks. In its statement, the syndicate affirmed its commitment to institutional work, holding the government, the local council, and the supervisory authority over the Cleaning Fund fully responsible for the consequences of ignoring legitimate demands.
