Israel intends to send an envoy to Lebanon to discuss economic cooperation despite ongoing tensions.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today, Wednesday, that Israel will send a special envoy to Lebanon to meet with officials there, in a step aimed at discussing the possibility of establishing an economic relationship and cooperation between the two sides. The statement explained that the acting director of the Israeli National Security Council will send the envoy on behalf of Netanyahu, without revealing details of the meeting or the identity of the Lebanese officials concerned. This step comes despite the ongoing tensions, as Israeli attacks against sites belonging to Hezbollah have not stopped since the ceasefire agreement reached through US mediation last year. Observers believe that sending the envoy may indicate attempts to reduce tension on the border, in light of regional challenges, and to explore economic opportunities that may include offshore gas files or reconstruction in conflict-affected areas.
