The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), a unit of the Israeli army, announced today, Wednesday, that the Rafah border crossing with Egypt will be reopened in the next few days to allow residents of the Gaza Strip to cross into Egyptian territory. The unit said that the new arrangement was made with Israeli security approval and will be coordinated with the Egyptian authorities and under the supervision of the European Union mission, according to the mechanism adopted in January 2025. The announcement comes amid the difficult humanitarian conditions in the sector and the continued limited flow of aid, amid regional and international efforts to calm the situation and open permanent humanitarian corridors. No further details have been announced yet regarding the targeted groups or the registration and crossing mechanism, but informed sources indicated that priority will be given to emergency medical and humanitarian cases.
