Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam predicted that the Lebanese army would complete the process of confining weapons south of the Litani River before the end of this year, in a move he described as "pivotal" within a broader plan to re-regulate illegal weapons in various Lebanese regions. Salam said in a television interview on the "Wahlaq Shou" program on Al Jadeed channel on Sunday evening that Hezbollah's deputies agreed to the ministerial statement, which clearly stipulates the state's commitment to confining weapons to official institutions only, noting that this means that the party is now concerned with adhering to the items of this agreement. Salam added: "The real test will be after the south, when the army moves to the second, third, and fourth phases of the weapons control plan, to include other areas in the Bekaa, the north, and the southern suburbs." The Prime Minister's statements come amid increasing international and regional pressure to implement Security Council resolutions, especially Resolution 1701, which calls for confining weapons south of the Litani to the Lebanese army and UNIFIL forces.
