Lebanese President Joseph Aoun signed today in Beirut, with his Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides, an agreement to demarcate the maritime borders between the two countries, in a move described as a pivotal moment to open new horizons for economic and investment cooperation. President Aoun affirmed during a joint press conference that the agreement paves the way for the two countries to begin exploring marine resources, enhances their commitment to international law, and strengthens friendly relations. He pointed out that the next stage will witness the development of bilateral agreements that include joint projects in the fields of traditional and renewable energy, communications, and tourism, in addition to security and defense cooperation. For his part, the Cypriot President stressed the historical importance of the agreement, describing it as a positive message that supports stability and regional cooperation. He revealed that the two countries will resort to the World Bank for technical advice on the feasibility of electrical interconnection projects. The signing of this agreement comes after the initial agreement signed in 2007 remained suspended for years, before steps accelerated following the visit of Lebanese Energy Minister Joseph Sader to Cyprus last month, and the Lebanese government's final ratification of the agreement.
