Thousands of Tunisian citizens took to the streets yesterday evening in a massive protest march that swept through the streets of the capital and a number of cities, rejecting what they described as the escalating "despotism and monopolization of power," accusing President Kais Saied of using the judiciary and security services to liquidate his political opponents. The demonstrators raised banners with slogans such as "We are suffocating," "The people want the fall of the regime," and "No to despotism," amid a notable presence of representatives of civil society organizations, professional unions, and opposition parties from various political orientations, in a rare scene of unity against the existing authority. The demonstration came amid the escalating political and economic crisis in the country, and the rising level of popular discontent, especially after the increase in arrests and trials affecting journalists, activists, and opposition politicians. Participants in the march said that Tunisia "has turned into an open prison," while the father of political detainee Jawhar Ben Mbarek, during his participation in the protests, described the situation as dangerous, saying: "We are all on temporary release... we will not be silent and we will not surrender Tunisia to him." The demonstration also witnessed support for the demands of the residents of the city of Gabes, who are affected by industrial pollution, where the protesters demanded the dismantling of the chemical complex that is accused of causing an environmental and health disaster in the region.
