Arab Sea - Follow-ups: China expressed its readiness on Monday to enhance its role in supporting security and stability in Syria, and to actively participate in the reconstruction of its war-torn economy, in a move that reflects the growing Chinese involvement in Middle Eastern issues. This came during official talks in Beijing between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad, as part of the latter's official visit to China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Beijing sees Syria's stability as part of the region's stability, and that it supports Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that China is ready to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields, especially in reconstruction and economic development. For his part, the Syrian minister expressed his country's appreciation for China's firm stances in supporting Syria in international forums, stressing Damascus' desire to expand areas of cooperation with China, especially within the framework of the "Belt and Road" initiative. This step comes at a time when international calls are increasing to reintegrate Syria economically and politically after more than a decade of conflict, amid a sharp economic deterioration and Western sanctions that hinder reconstruction efforts.
