The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed on Thursday the statements of US Senator Marco Rubio regarding the situation in Sudan, in which he hinted at the possibility of designating the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as a terrorist organization if that would contribute to ending the ongoing war in the country. In an official statement, the ministry said that accusing the RSF paves the way for correcting the international community's view of what is happening in Sudan, stressing that the US Senator's statements represent "a strong message to the rest of the countries" that are following the peace file, or those that supply the RSF with mercenaries and weapons. The statement added that "the time has come to hold the RSF accountable" for the violations committed against civilians, stressing that the Sudanese army is performing its constitutional role in protecting the country and preserving its sovereignty. Earlier today, US Senator Marco Rubio stated that humanitarian reports indicate unprecedented levels of malnutrition and suffering among those displaced from conflict areas in Sudan, warning of a decline in the number of refugees, which may indicate that many have died from hunger or disease. Rubio affirmed that the goal of any potential designation of the RSF is to stop violations and atrocities against civilians, including sexual violence and attacks on women and children, noting that what is happening is systematic behavior and not individual actions. These statements come amid the continued fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF since April 2023, amid repeated failures of regional and international mediations to reach a permanent ceasefire, and the worsening humanitarian situation in the Darfur region and other areas of the country.
