Assassination of Dr. Afthan Al-Mashhari in Taiz, and the Yemeni Peace Committee condemns the crime and demands that the perpetrators be held accountable. Taiz - September 18, 2025 The city of Taiz witnessed a horrific assassination this morning, Thursday, targeting Dr. Afthan Al-Mashhari, Director of the Sanitation and Improvement Fund in the governorate, while she was passing through Sinan Street in the city center, where she was subjected to direct fire from unknown gunmen. Local sources said that Dr. Al-Mashhari died immediately, while the perpetrators fled, in an operation described as a full-fledged assassination crime that reflects the increasing state of security chaos in the city of Taiz. In the first official reaction from civil society organizations, the Yemeni Peace Committee issued a strongly worded statement condemning the crime and describing it as "a dangerous message confirming that Taiz is being pushed into a dark tunnel," holding the Islah Party (the Muslim Brotherhood branch in Yemen), the local authority, and the security services fully responsible. In its statement, the committee called on the Governor of Taiz, Professor Nabil Shamsan, the commander of the axis, Major General Khaled Fadel, and the Director of Taiz Police to quickly arrest the killers, reveal their motives, and impose the most severe penalties on them, in addition to developing an urgent plan to restore security and end the chaos and randomness that is plaguing the city. The committee affirmed that the local authority's responsibility is not limited to pursuing the perpetrators of assassinations, but extends to ensuring that the city of Taiz is a safe and stable city, far from chaos and outlaws. The assassination of Dr. Afthan Al-Mashhari has sparked a state of anger and resentment in popular and official circles, amid widespread demands to put an end to the phenomenon of assassinations that threatens social peace in Taiz. The following is the text of the statement In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful Statement of condemnation and denunciation issued by the Yemeni Peace Committee Thursday, September 18, 2025 With great sadness and anger, the Yemeni Peace Committee received the news of the heinous crime and treacherous assassination that targeted Dr. Afthan Al-Mashhari, Director of the Sanitation Fund in Taiz Governorate, this morning in Sinan Street, in a full-fledged criminal operation that shook the human conscience and confirmed beyond any doubt that the city of Taiz is on the verge of total chaos that threatens its security, stability, and social peace. We in the Yemeni Peace Committee affirm that this cowardly crime cannot be separated from the context of the series of assassinations and security chaos that has been gnawing at the body of Taiz for years, and which has turned into a nightmare that weighs heavily on its people. The assassination of a leading and administrative figure the size of Dr. Afthan Al-Mashhari does not only mean targeting her as a human being and a successful leading woman, but it is a clear message that Taiz is being deliberately pushed into a dark tunnel, the continuation of which cannot be accepted. Accordingly, we hold the Islah Party (the Muslim Brotherhood branch in Yemen) and the local authority in Taiz Governorate, represented by the Governor of the Governorate, Professor Nabil Shamsan, the commander of the axis, Major General Khaled Fadel, and the Director of Taiz Police, and all the pillars of the local and security authority, fully responsible for this crime and what preceded it and what may follow it. We demand that they bear their national and moral responsibilities without delay, through: 1. Immediately arresting the killers and those behind them and revealing their motives to the public. 2. Imposing the most severe deterrent penalties on the criminals, in order to ensure that these crimes are not repeated. 3. Developing an urgent plan to restore security in Taiz and end the chaos and randomness, in a way that preserves the dignity, rights, and lives of citizens. 4. Dismantling the hotbeds of gangs and outlaws and drying up the sources of chaos in all its forms. Their responsibility is not limited to pursuing the killers, but extends to restoring the reputation of the city of Taiz as a safe civil city, and as a living part of the desired Yemeni state project. In conclusion, the Yemeni Peace Committee announces its full solidarity with the martyr Dr. Afthan Al-Mashhari, and with all the oppressed in the north, south, east, and west of the country, and affirms that silence on these crimes is a betrayal of justice and humanity, and that the security of Taiz has become a national issue par excellence that requires a serious and urgent stand from everyone. May God have mercy on the martyr, and may God curse the killers and those behind them. Issued by: The Yemeni Peace Committee September 18, 2025 - Republic of Yemen
