Arabian Sea Newspaper - Special
In a heinous crime that shook the city of Taiz this Saturday morning, Professor Iftihan al-Mashhari, Director General of the Cleaning and Improvement Fund, was assassinated by unknown gunmen in broad daylight, in the middle of the city and in front of passers-by and surveillance cameras. According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen fired more than twenty bullets from point-blank range at al-Mashhari's head and body, killing her instantly in a horrific manner that sparked widespread social shock, while activists circulated photos from the scene showing the brutality of the crime. Al-Mashhari, who was known for her integrity and courage in confronting corruption issues within the Cleaning and Improvement Foundation, had received repeated threats in recent months against the backdrop of her reform efforts, according to sources close to her. Local reports confirmed that she had filed official complaints with the security services and the public prosecutor after being forcibly locked inside the Fund's building, but the authorities did not take serious action to protect her. Following the incident, dozens of women staged an angry demonstration in front of the security directorate in Taiz, demanding that the perpetrators be brought to justice quickly, and denouncing what they described as "collusion and negligence of the security services" in dealing with the threats that preceded the assassination. The crime sparked a wave of anger and grief on social media platforms, where activists considered the assassination of al-Mashhari to be "a stab in the face of humanity and a dangerous message about the rise of corruption," stressing that targeting a woman defending integrity and values expresses an "unprecedented decline" in the course of the conflict in Taiz. So far, there has been no official comment from the security or military authorities regarding the incident, while the Yemeni street awaits an urgent response that puts an end to the state of security chaos and stops the escalating series of assassinations in the city.
