International Program on Monitoring and Documenting Violations in Uganda with Yemeni Participation

Arab Sea - Yemen - Follow-ups: Eight human rights organizations from several Yemeni governorates are participating in a human rights training program, which began in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, on monitoring and documenting human rights violations in accordance with international mechanisms and standards. The program, organized by the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies from September 12 to 17, aims to provide 14 participants with the latest theoretical concepts and knowledge related to monitoring and documentation mechanisms, their objectives and basic principles, and to develop their professional capabilities and raise the level of their practical skills in dealing with various individual or collective violations or recurring patterns, according to the latest monitoring methods and techniques used at the regional and international levels. Over six days of intensive training, the program includes the most important ethical principles in human rights work and the most prominent standards that must be observed during the monitoring and documentation process and conducting field interviews with victims of violations, as well as enhancing active listening skills and asking open-ended questions as a basic tool in documentation compared to traditional questionnaires. The program reviews a number of human rights evidences and reports and the standards for verifying them, based on successful human rights experiences from multiple countries, in order to ensure the adoption of more professional strategies that provide reliable data that can be relied upon in advocacy and accountability efforts before UN and international mechanisms. The head of the Equality for Rights and Freedoms Organization, Walid Al-Jabr, stressed the importance of this specialized and qualitative training program to qualify the cadres of the participating Yemeni organizations and train them on the latest methods, techniques and mechanisms of monitoring and documentation in a more professional and impartial manner and in accordance with international standards. He pointed out that this program represents an important opportunity for the participating organizations to exchange experiences with their regional and international counterparts, which enhances their role in defending human rights, advocating for victims, and conveying their voices to international forums.
