Yemen: Discussion of UNDP interventions in addressing climate change disasters in Aden

Arabian Sea - Yemen - Follow-ups: The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation for the Agricultural Production Sector, Engineer Abdulmalik Naji, discussed today with the Director of the Integrated Water Resources Management Project at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Engineer Anmar Abdulwahed, the possible interventions of the program to confront the repercussions of climate disasters, and ways to reduce the damage of the floods that recently struck the governorates of Aden and Lahj. The meeting dealt with the Integrated Water Resources Management Project implemented by the program in the Tuban Valley Basin with funding from the German government, and its activities that include the rehabilitation of dam gates and water barriers, the maintenance of irrigation canals, and the construction of stone and gabion protections, in addition to earthen barriers in one hundred locations along the banks of the Tuban Valley. The two sides stressed the importance of accelerating the completion of the remaining interventions of the project according to the priorities specified in the technical report submitted by the Ministry, while discussing the possibility of expanding the scope of the project's activities to include the maintenance of irrigation mechanisms belonging to the Agriculture Office in Lahj, in order to ensure maximizing the benefit from the project in promoting sustainable development and supporting food security.
