Arab Sea - Yemen - Follow-ups: The Special Envoy of the United Nations to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, expressed his deep concern about the recent escalation in the country, warning that the rising tensions could turn into a broader confrontation that threatens civilians and regional stability. In a statement issued by Grundberg, he said that the Israeli attacks on areas controlled by the Houthis, following the recent missile and drone attacks on Israel, increase the risks to civilians and civilian infrastructure, stressing that Yemen cannot become an arena for a broader geopolitical conflict. The UN envoy pointed to civilian deaths and injuries as a result of the Israeli strikes, as well as the deaths of Houthi leaders and some political mediators, calling on all parties to stop the attacks immediately and resort to diplomatic channels to reduce the escalation. This warning comes amid a dangerous escalation of events since the expansion of the war in Gaza to include the Red Sea front, where the Houthis have intensified their missile and drone attacks on Israeli targets and international navigation, prompting Tel Aviv to carry out direct strikes inside Yemeni territory targeting the group's leadership positions. Grundberg stressed the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure in accordance with international humanitarian law, warning that the continued escalation could lead to catastrophic humanitarian repercussions in a country already suffering from one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. These moves come as the United Nations was trying to resume negotiations between the internationally recognized Yemeni government and the Houthis, amid fears that the current escalation would undermine limited peace efforts and further complicate the humanitarian and political situation in the country.
