Dana Gas, an Emirati company, announced on Thursday the suspension of operations at the Khor Mor gas field in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, following an attack targeting one of the field's storage facilities on Wednesday evening, which led to a fire and a widespread power outage in the region, with no casualties reported. The company, which is one of the main operators of the field, said that the attack did not affect oil production and export in the region, but it disrupted the gas supplies necessary for electricity generation, leading to a severe energy crisis. Ahmed, the deputy director of the Kurdistan Regional Government's chief of staff, called on the US administration via the "X" platform to allow the regional government to obtain anti-drone defense systems to protect its vital facilities. It is worth noting that the Khor Mor field is managed by the Pearl Consortium, which includes Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum, and is one of the most important sources of gas supply used in electricity generation within Kurdistan. An engineer at the site confirmed to Reuters that firefighters managed to control the fire at dawn on Thursday, but the damage to the gas facilities was immediately reflected in the power plants, at a time when the region's Ministry of Electricity announced that production capacity had decreased by about 3,000 megawatts, which caused significant outages in various regions. The latest attack comes after a series of previous drone attacks, the most prominent of which was last July, which targeted oil facilities in Kurdistan and reduced production at that time by about 150,000 barrels per day. While the party responsible for the latest attack is not yet known, local officials such as Aziz Ahmed, deputy director of the regional government's chief of staff, link these attacks to Iranian-backed groups seeking to strike US and regional interests in northern Iraq.
