Arabian Sea - Yemen - Follow-ups: The Yemeni Banks Association issued a strongly worded statement today, Tuesday, in which it affirmed its categorical rejection of what it described as "malicious campaigns" targeting the banking sector through the media and social media platforms. The association stressed that these systematic campaigns harm the national economy and seek to undermine citizens' confidence in financial institutions. The association explained that Yemeni banks are working as a united front behind the Central Bank of Yemen, noting that the stability of the banking sector is a safety valve for the national economy and guarantees the continued provision of salaries and basic services to citizens. The association also affirmed that it is working in full coordination with the Central Bank in the interim capital, Aden, through the Financial Information Gathering Unit, to monitor attempts at incitement and extortion targeting banks. The statement pointed out that some security agencies cooperated in monitoring these campaigns that are abusive to the banking sector. The Yemeni Banks Association called on all parties to immediately stop attempts at distortion and incitement, and to work to protect the national economy and avoid shaking people's confidence in the banking system, while at the same time affirming that it will not hesitate to take legal measures against those proven to be involved in these campaigns. The statement concluded by emphasizing that the association stands united with the Central Bank and the banking sector to confront any targeting aimed at undermining the reputation of Yemeni banks or weakening them.
