Arab Gulf - Agencies: Denmark is a popular destination for people wishing to get married, but it turns out that newlyweds have been overcharged for years, and the Danish authorities are now forced to refund them millions of kroner. The Danish news agency reported, quoting the Politiken newspaper, that 1,500 kroner (about $235) were illegally collected from each of about 12,000 couples, most of them from abroad. This illegal practice has been in place since 2018. The authorities must now refund 23 million kroner (about $3.6 million). The Culture Department in the city of Copenhagen confirmed the error in response to a question from the German news agency. "That was really very unfortunate," said Mia Nyegaard, Director of the Culture Department, in a statement. Nyegaard added that this illegal practice stopped as soon as it was discovered in the spring of 2025, but how the amounts due will be paid has not yet been determined. It is likely that many of the affected couples were from Germany, but the administration was unable to provide any figures.
