Amazon announced on Monday evening a massive $50 billion investment plan to expand its infrastructure in the field of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, through its cloud arm "Amazon Web Services" (AWS), to serve U.S. government agencies. The company explained in a statement that the project, which will begin implementation in 2026, includes the establishment of advanced data centers that add 1.3 gigawatts of new capacity, specifically designed to meet the needs of federal entities. This investment allows government agencies to access advanced artificial intelligence tools, including "Claude" models from Anthropic, "Nvidia" chips, and "Amazon's" own "Trainium" chips. This move comes amid an accelerating race among major technology companies, such as "Meta," "Oracle," and "OpenAI," to strengthen artificial intelligence infrastructure within the United States. Amazon confirmed that the project will enable agencies to develop customized artificial intelligence applications and improve government efficiency, noting that "AWS" services currently serve more than 11,000 government entities.
