Arab Sea - Follow-ups: The "Common Sense Media" organization, which advises parents and school staff to ensure the safe use of social media and technology by children, indicated that the services of Google's "Gemini AI" artificial intelligence chat platform are not suitable for children, despite the addition of some protection features recently. The organization says that the "Gemini" platform poses a "significant risk" to children, after discovering what it described as "fundamental flaws in the design and a lack of age-appropriate safety measures." "Gemini" under the age of 13 and "Gemini" with teen protection appear to be adult versions of "Gemini," with some additional safety features, and not platforms specifically designed for children," Common Sense stated. Common Sense found that "(Gemini) treats all children or adolescents equally, despite the significant differences in the degree of development, ignoring that younger users need different guidance and information than older users." The organization warned that "Gemini's filters provide some protection, but they still expose children to inappropriate material and fail to distinguish serious mental health symptoms," describing "Gemini" as "the first major AI-powered chat platform designed for use by children under the age of 13." In the context of other recent warnings about other chat platforms that answer inquiries with comments that may be interpreted as encouraging self-harm, and even suicide, Common Sense said it found that "Gemini" provides "unsafe mental health advice." In addition to providing dangerous advice, "Gemini" easily allowed the circulation of "inappropriate and unsafe material unacceptable for children," according to Common Sense, including references to alcohol, drugs, and sex.
