Yesterday, Wednesday, the "Ather" (Trace) exhibition by visual artist Laila Yassin opened at the Yemeni Cultural Center in Cairo. It will run for two days and conclude tomorrow, Thursday. The Deputy Director of the Yemeni Cultural Center, Nabil Subaie, welcomed the attendees at the opening of the exhibition, noting that this is Laila Yassin's third solo exhibition, and the first she has held in Egypt. He also spoke about the exhibition's message and its cultural program, which included a solo violin performance by artist Badr Mustafa. For her part, artist Laila Yassin explained that the exhibition focuses on feet as a symbol of "Ather" (trace), in reference to the tangible and intangible heritage of the traditional women's dress known as "Al-Shaitara," made with various handmade embroideries. She added that her works have evolved to embody the "Ather" (trace) on women's faces, with features expressing different emotions, allowing each recipient to read the work according to their own vision. Dr. Amna Al-Nusairi spoke about the importance of the exhibition, emphasizing the influence of the great late artist Yassin Ghaleb on his daughter Laila, describing her as an artistic symbol reflecting the steadfast Yemeni culture despite wars and violence, stressing that Yemen will triumph for life and joy with the presence of artists like her. Laila Yassin's works are characterized by the diversity of their colors inspired by the Yemeni environment. Her works also reflect the influence of Egyptian culture, drawing inspiration from Egyptian cinema and the features of women with colored scarves. Artist Laila Yassin, born in 1992, began her artistic career in 2002, and has presented works that blend feelings, colors, and identity. She held two exhibitions in Yemen entitled "Insistence" (2010) and "Interconnection" (2019), and participated in several exhibitions inside and outside Yemen, most notably the "From the Land of Sheba" exhibition in Geneva in 2024.
