Arab Sea - Follow-ups: The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, called on the world to work to end the danger of nuclear weapons and eliminate these weapons themselves. In a message on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, which was read on his behalf by the High Representative of the Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial event, Guterres said, "80 years ago, the world changed forever. In a single moment, fire swept through Hiroshima, tens of thousands of people lost their lives, and humanity crossed a point of no return." Izumi Nakamitsu said, "In the Pact for the Future, which was adopted last year, states renewed their commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons." She pointed out that this year also marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, and said: "We are reminded of the reasons for the establishment of the United Nations to prevent war, preserve human dignity, and ensure that the tragedies of the past are not repeated." The High Representative of the Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs warned that the risks of nuclear conflict are growing, trust is eroding, and geopolitical divisions are widening.
