South African police announced on Saturday the killing of 11 people, including a child, in an armed attack targeting a hotel in the capital, Pretoria, in what is considered one of the latest episodes of armed violence the country has witnessed in recent years. Police spokeswoman Athlinda Mathe said that a group of gunmen stormed the hotel located in the town of Solsvele, about 18 kilometers west of Pretoria, and opened fire randomly on those present, killing ten people at the scene of the attack, while another person later died in the hospital. Mathe confirmed that 25 people were injured as a result of the shooting, 14 of whom were transferred to hospitals for treatment, and their condition is still being assessed. Security services are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the attack, which comes as part of a series of bloody incidents in several regions of South Africa, amid calls to tighten security measures to reduce rising crime rates.
