In a move that sparked widespread controversy, Republican Senator Bernie Moreno introduced a bill aimed at abolishing dual citizenship in the United States, in defiance of current laws that allow American citizens to hold foreign citizenship without having to choose between the two. The "Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025" stipulates that any American citizen holding another citizenship will be required to renounce one of the citizenships within one year of the law's entry into force, otherwise they will be considered to have automatically renounced American citizenship. The bill requires individuals to submit a written declaration to the Secretary of State or the Secretary of Homeland Security to confirm their choice. Senator Moreno, who renounced his Colombian citizenship for American citizenship, says: "Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege, and if you want to be an American, you must be fully committed. It's time to end dual citizenship." However, the bill faces significant legal challenges, as it is expected to be challenged before the Supreme Court, given precedents dating back to 1795 and 1967, which ruled that American citizens are not required to renounce their citizenship if they acquire another citizenship. Unofficial estimates indicate that about 40 million Americans hold dual citizenship, most of whom are of Mexican origin.
