The United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the 2025 Political Declaration on the implementation of the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons, reaffirming the commitment of Member States to strengthen international efforts to confront this transnational crime. The adopted declaration emphasizes the need to address the social, economic, cultural, and political factors that make individuals vulnerable to trafficking, in addition to criminalizing all forms of this crime, strengthening the capabilities of law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, and developing regional and international cooperation to prosecute those involved and protect victims. The President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, said that trafficking in persons is a crime that requires a "firm response" and a comprehensive approach based on justice, data, and human dignity, to ensure that survivors are supported and traffickers are held fully accountable. For his part, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, affirmed that trafficking in persons is an "unacceptable violation" of human rights, noting that its victims include even "the youngest members of the human family," whether for the purposes of forced labor, domestic service, forced marriage, crime, or sexual exploitation.
