Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held talks today, Sunday, on the sidelines of the G20 summit in South Africa, addressing developments in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip, as well as strategic files in energy and innovation. According to a joint statement issued by the Canadian and German governments, the two leaders stressed their full support for a "comprehensive peace plan" to end the war in Gaza, stressing the need to open the way for humanitarian aid to enter the sector widely and quickly, in order to meet the growing needs of civilians amid continuing military operations. Regarding the war in Ukraine, Carney and Merz stressed the need for Ukraine to be a direct party to any future agreement, while emphasizing the protection of its vital interests and providing clear security guarantees to prevent a recurrence of Russian aggression. The two sides also discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in strategic areas, most notably critical minerals, clean energy, artificial intelligence, and the space and defense sector, as part of joint efforts to promote technological independence and the transition to a green and secure economy. These talks come at a time when international efforts are intensifying to find diplomatic solutions to the raging conflicts, amid major shifts in the map of alliances and geopolitical files.
