Arab Sea - Follow-ups: U.S. President Donald Trump said today that he does not rule out the possibility of deploying U.S. troops on the ground in Venezuela, while expressing his willingness to listen directly to his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro regarding proposals to avoid further military escalation. Trump responded to a question during a press conference at the White House about the possibility of military intervention in Venezuela, saying, "No, I don't rule that out, I don't rule anything out." He added that he might contact Maduro directly, noting that he "talks to everyone." The United States is launching a campaign against boats suspected of smuggling drugs off the Venezuelan coast and the Pacific coast of Latin America, amid accusations from Maduro that the U.S. military reinforcements are aimed at overthrowing him. Trump's comments clarify his willingness to escalate the confrontation, but at the same time he is open to the possibility of easing tensions if Venezuela presents acceptable proposals. Trump also expressed his desire to eliminate cocaine networks in Colombia, without announcing a direct military intervention there. While human rights groups denounce the U.S. strikes against the boats, considering them extrajudicial killings, the White House affirms that the war against drug gangs requires taking action without resorting to courts in armed conflicts.
