The government of Bangladesh has requested India to hand over the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed and former Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, after they were sentenced to death in absentia for allegedly committing crimes against humanity during the security campaign against the student uprising in 2024, which resulted in the death of about 1,400 people. The Bangladeshi government affirmed that India is obligated to hand over the wanted individuals under the extradition treaty, while the Indian Ministry of External Affairs only stated that it would deal constructively with the concerned parties without clarifying whether it would hand over Hasina. For its part, the United Nations expressed its regret for the ruling, while Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajeeb Wazed described the rulings as political and accused the court of bias, stressing that India would not hand her over and would ensure her safety. Bangladesh is witnessing an escalation in security tensions, with explosions, bus burnings, and arrests of supporters of the Awami League party, amid tightened border measures and the suspension of in-person education in schools.
