Arab Sea - Follow-ups: A minister said on Monday that the interim government in Nepal, led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, has formed a committee to investigate the violence that erupted during anti-corruption protests this month, which resulted in the deaths of 74 people and forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign, according to Reuters. The demonstrations, led by youth of the 1990s and early 2000s (Generation Z), escalated in protest against corruption and lack of jobs, turning into the fiercest wave of violence the Himalayan nation has witnessed in decades. More than 2,100 people were injured when protesters set fire to the main government complex, which houses the Prime Minister's office, the Supreme Court, and the Parliament building, as well as shopping centers, luxury hotels, and showrooms that protesters said were owned by people close to corrupt politicians. Rameshwor Khanal, who was appointed by Karki as head of the Ministry of Finance, stated that the three-member committee, headed by retired Judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, has been given three months to complete the investigation. "The committee will investigate... the loss of life and property during the protests, the excesses on both sides, and the people involved in arson and sabotage during the demonstrations," Khanal told Reuters. In a post on social media, former Prime Minister Oli called for an investigation into the violence, saying that his government did not order the police to shoot at protesters. He added that foreign elements had infiltrated the protests and that the police did not possess the weapons used against the protesters. Gauri Bahadur Karki previously headed a special court to hear corruption cases in Nepal and is known for his good reputation, honesty, and integrity.
