Arabian Sea - Follow-ups: Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani affirmed on Thursday his country's readiness to support the imposition of sanctions by the European Union on Israel, provided that they do not affect civilians. Tajani said, in a speech before the Italian Senate, that Rome supports targeting sanctions against Israeli ministers who adopt "unacceptable" positions towards Gaza and the West Bank. The Italian position comes after a proposal from the European Commission to impose broad measures against Israel, including suspending some trade preferences that cover about a third of its exports to EU countries, in response to the ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip. The High Representative for Foreign Policy in the European Union, Kaya Callas, stressed yesterday that the situation in Gaza is "going in the wrong direction," confirming that Israeli actions violate the cooperation agreement with the Union regarding respect for human rights. Callas explained that the proposed sanctions include suspending trade privileges and imposing restrictions on extremist ministers and violent settlers, along with figures from Hamas, with the aim of "sending a clear message about the need to end the war, stop the suffering, and release the prisoners."
