Arabian Sea_France Presse: The Australian government revealed on Sunday that it will spend 12 billion Australian dollars (8 billion US dollars) to upgrade shipyard facilities and equip them to be able to receive its future fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. Defense Minister Richard Marles stated that this "very large" investment will be spent over 10 years on a shipbuilding and maintenance facility in Perth, Western Australia. The government began allocating funds to the Henderson defense center in Perth since the signing of the AUKUS agreement with Britain and the United States, which includes a deal to purchase a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. Australia, which lacks the necessary infrastructure to service this type of submarine, intends to purchase three American Virginia-class nuclear submarines within 15 years, with a plan to establish infrastructure to manufacture its own submarines in the future. Marles added that the government plans to equip the Henderson center with highly secure dry docks for submarine maintenance, in addition to facilities for manufacturing landing ships and Japanese Mogami-class frigates. The minister pointed out that the total cost of developing the Henderson defense center may eventually reach about 25 billion Australian dollars.
