Arab Sea_Follow-ups: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced on Friday evening the launch of a new military initiative called "Eastern Guardian," aimed at strengthening the defenses of Europe's eastern flank, following the intrusion of a Russian drone into Polish airspace this week. CNN reported that the operation will begin in the coming days and will involve forces from Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and other countries. Rutte was quoted as saying that the upcoming "Eastern Guardian" operation "will add flexibility and strength to Europe's defensive posture and confirm that we as an alliance are always ready to protect our territory." For his part, the Supreme Commander of NATO forces in Europe, US General Alexis Greenkewich, described the operation as "flexible and agile," explaining that it will include integrated air and ground defense systems and enhanced information sharing between allies. General Greenkewich pointed out that "the completion of the operation will take some time, but the first steps will begin immediately," he said. According to a statement from the alliance, the operation will include the deployment of two F-16 fighter jets and an anti-aircraft frigate from Denmark, three Rafale fighters from France, and four Eurofighter fighters from Germany, along with other reinforcements along the eastern flank from northern Europe to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. Rutte stressed that the Russian aircraft's intrusion "was not an isolated incident," noting that "Russia's recklessness in the air along the eastern flank is increasing at a dangerous pace." In Poland, Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as a "deliberate attack," rejecting US President Donald Trump's suggestions that the violation may have been accidental. Tusk said: "We wished it was a mistake, but it wasn't. We know that." Polish authorities reported that they detected as many as 21 Russian drones on Wednesday that entered the country's airspace from Belarus, with the wreckage of only 16 of them found in various locations. In response to the accusations, the Russian envoy to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, denied his country's responsibility, stressing that the range of the aircraft used "does not allow them to reach Polish territory." France also summoned the Russian ambassador in Paris in protest, while NATO continued to assess the incident. Rutte stressed that "Russian actions, whether deliberate or not, have violated NATO airspace. Therefore, we must affirm our determination and ability to defend our territory, and this is the primary goal of Operation Eastern Guardian."
