Ryan Roth Trial: Trump Assassination Attempt Sparks Legal and Political Debate Arab Sea - Follow-ups Fort Pierce, Florida – Thursday, September 11, 2025 The trial of Ryan Roth (59), accused of attempting to assassinate former US President Donald Trump during his tour of his golf course in West Palm Beach in September 2024, during his re-election campaign, began yesterday in a federal court in Fort Pierce, Florida. Trial Details Judge Aileen Cannon authorized Ryan Roth to defend himself without appointing a lawyer. In the first session, Roth began his plea with an unconventional question about "Gaza," which surprised the audience. Despite the judge's attempts to calm the situation, Roth continued his approach, prompting the judge to end the opening statement and request that witnesses be called. Roth faces five major charges, including attempting to assassinate a presidential candidate, a crime that could carry a life sentence. He also faces charges of illegally possessing a firearm, possessing a firearm with an unclear serial number, possessing a firearm for the purpose of committing a violent crime, and assaulting a federal agent. Context of the Incident On September 15, 2024, Secret Service agents tasked with protecting senior American political figures spotted Roth carrying a weapon near the golf course where Trump was. He was arrested afterwards, and six mobile phones, a passport, additional license plates, and a handwritten list including Trump's campaign locations and events were found in his car. Background of the Accused Roth, who previously worked in contracting, was known for his provocative stances on social media. In 2022, he announced that he had traveled to Ukraine to fight against Russia, and wrote to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky: "I am an American coming to fight with you to the death... Every civilian in the world must join this battle." In a book he self-published in 2023, he said he voted for Trump in 2016, but later regretted it because of the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. Trial Expectations The trial is expected to last two to four weeks. The upcoming sessions will focus on presenting evidence and testimony, and assessing whether Roth's actions pose a real threat to US national security.
