Arabian Gulf_Reuters: Heavily armed soldiers stood guard at the parliament building in Nepal on Wednesday, amid empty streets after an indefinite curfew was imposed in the capital Kathmandu, following two days of protests against corruption that left people dead and led to the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, according to Reuters. Nepal's worst unrest in decades erupted over a social media ban imposed last week before authorities reversed it after 19 people were killed on Monday when police used tear gas and rubber bullets to control crowds. Burnt vehicles and piles of twisted metal were scattered around the parliament, where army firefighters tried to extinguish a fire in the main hall, while the exterior was burned after angry protesters set it on fire on Tuesday. "We are trying to restore the situation to normal first...we are committed to protecting people's lives and property," said army spokesman Raja Ram Basnet. Armored vehicles remained stationed on the empty streets, with the exception of a few passers-by, as shops and markets closed their doors. A number of government buildings, including the Supreme Court, as well as the homes of ministers and the Prime Minister's private residence were set on fire during Tuesday's protests. The unrest only subsided after the resignation was announced. A spokesman for Kathmandu airport said flights were disrupted as the capital's main airport was closed until 6 p.m. (1215 GMT).
