Iran threatens to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in response to the activation of Western sanctions. Follow-ups - Arab Sea Tehran - In a move described as the most dangerous escalation in years, the Iranian parliament announced today that it is seriously considering the option of withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), in response to what it considered a "flagrant violation" by the United States and European countries by reactivating the "snapback" mechanism to revive international sanctions on Iran. Prominent members of the Iranian parliament stated that this option is now on the table as a "sovereign response" that frees the country from the legal restrictions that shackle its nuclear program. In contrast, European capitals warned that any Iranian withdrawal would undermine the international system for limiting the proliferation of nuclear weapons and give Tehran's adversaries justification for military escalation. At the same time, Iranian newspapers close to the Revolutionary Guard considered the activation of sanctions to be a "declaration of economic war," and that the response through parliament would shift the confrontation from the field of sanctions to the field of international legitimacy.
