The United Nations warned on Tuesday that sudden and significant cuts in international funding threaten global efforts to combat HIV/AIDS. The Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Winnie Byanyima, said during a press conference in Geneva ahead of World AIDS Day 2025: "The global response to HIV has suffered its biggest setback in decades." She added that sudden cuts from many international donors, especially after the cessation of US funding with the return of President Donald Trump to the White House, have shocked low- and middle-income countries. Byanyima warned that these cuts threaten HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment services, noting that a continued decline in support could lead to approximately 3.3 million additional new infections by 2030, calling on the international community to act quickly to save efforts to combat the disease.
